The Portrait of New York City project is made possible through the generous support of The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust. The project will culminate in A Portrait of New York City report in early 2018, a comprehensive, data-driven picture of well-being in New York City. The conceptual spine of the report will be a ranked American Human Development Index, an alternative to money metrics that tells the story of how ordinary New Yorkers are faring by combining health, education, and earnings metrics into a single number. The Index will highlight which groups are surging ahead, which are lagging behind, and why.

Supplementing the data-based research for this project is a “Community Portraits” grants challenge, administered by the NYC Human Services Council. This site features the community portraits created by nearly 20 NYC-based human services organizations to illuminate important well-being challenges and unmet human needs in their neighborhoods or fields using the indicators found in DATA2GO.NYC.
